Being with my husband and two cats, travel, my home, meeting people, food, wine, being creative, music...art,

single mindedness, laziness,

My husband Russ and I live in Boston. We both have been in the food service industry and presently I am a Food Service Director for a public school system. I love what I do but am looking forward to the day I can retire. I had been a teacher before becoming a chef and after 9/11 felt the need to contribute more to our society than helping stock holders make money. I started working in Boston promoting the Universal Free Breakfast Program and got hooked by the students. My husband is semi retired and works for another school district in their food service dept. as a general worker. He has also been hooked by the kids. We, like many people, are considering the Yucatan and in particuliar, Merida as a place to retire. I like being in the city but Russ would prefer the beach. I need what cities offer which is why I am in Boston. I'm a native New Yorker and cities are in my blood. We have spent time in the Yucatan and loved the area and the people so we'll see!

Oops, forgot about Skype.  Thats available online and is free if you call another Skype user on their computer.  You can also use "Skype-out" to call from Skype to a cell or landline.  If you are on the computer you have the added benefit of being able to use your webcam and see each other as you talk.  You can download Skype for free.

Boing, regarding Vonage - we switched our home phone in Canada to Vonage a few months before we moved to Progreso.  It meant we could keep our old home phone number.  Vonage is a VOIP service, which means it works through a modem.  We pay $20 bucks a month, plus tax.  It gives us 500 minutes outgoing calls per month plus unlimited incoming calls, included.  Basically we can pick up our phone and modem and plug in anywhere and take our Canadian phone number with us.  Anywhere in the world.  We are really happy with it.  Our young adult children can call us anytime and we get lots of calls from them.  Our parents call us on it too.  We use Skype too, but Vonage means they can call us from their cell phones when they are on the move and don't have to be close to their computers.  Vonage has voicemail etc.  Check out their website:  vonage.ca.  (I sound like I should sell shares in Vonage!  But it just made staying connected to family a whole lot easier.)

I saw your post on here concerning bus travel in the Yucatn.  Look at www.ADO.com.mx and you should be able to find plenty of info, they have a nice station in Merida

Insurance is definitely not always included in the price of a car rental. You can expect to pay about $50USD per day for a car including insurance...be suspicious of those $19 per day companies, who often do not include the cost of insurance in their quote.
