Article: Lots going on at the beach this week - lobster season is open, stay away from the pier on rafts at night, the need for caretakers at beach homes is evident, the Comisario of Chicxulub announces late July and August events. Lobster Season Is Here! Someone asked about the price of lobster this year and this is what we found. According to a spokesperson for the fishermen, there are 24 boats in the fishing fleet - 12 use traps, 12 use divers. There are 1,500 fishermen who work on those boats. In addition, there are 350 local boats that fish for lobster. Last year, the season opened at $410 pesos per kilo and closed at $380 pesos per kilo. The total catch was 95 tons. They say that, this year, they will be happy to open at between $340 and $350 pesos per kilo and end the year with a catch of 100 tons. So far, they have been lucky. There is no hint of a red tide, so this just may be the beginning of a good season for our lobster fishermen - finally! Fishermen Warn of Tragedy Waiting to Happen The fishermen have noticed that folks are beginning to hang out around the "wharf of arcs" on rafts at night. Now that all of the construction is going on, there are no lights under the arcs. Unfortunately, there are a bunch of hot-doggers in pleasure boats who think it is great fun to run, wide open, in and out under the arcs. The fishermen say that the pleasure boats don't have the proper lights and signals and this is a tragedy just waiting to happen. If you know anyone who loves to raft at night, please warn them to stay away from the pier. The Case for Hiring a Caretaker This week, a lady from Merida came to open up her beach house for summer vacation and, to her horror, found 4 strangers living the good life in her pool. Needless to say, she called the police, who immediately arrested the people (and their dog). Upon further investigation, it was found that the lady's house had been broken into through the back door, but the only thing missing was a meat spit. This is the second time this lady's beach house has been broken into. If you are a newbie to Yucatan, the following is an important "aside" (with a bit of a grin). It is very important to note that the vehicle plates of these 4 trespassers were from another state. Criminals, you see, are never from Yucatan - never have been, never will be - even the American in this bunch isn't one of "our" gringos. Now - on with our story. These 4 strangers bonded themselves out of jail and the wheels of justice have begun to grind away on the case. However, this should give us all pause for thought. I have never seen a home, at the beach or anywhere else in Yucatan, that isn't evidence of the owner's love for the house and for this place. It is a terrible thing to come home and find that others have been in one's home uninvited. If you can hire a caretaker, please consider doing so. There are lots of great deals you can make (free rent instead of salary?) if you have a casita on site. If not, why not split the bill for a roving security guard with a few friends? Any kind of supervision of your property when you are away is better than no supervision at all. This is becoming an issue every summer as expats come in greater and greater numbers, providing more and more opportunities to break in to folks who are "not from here." Summer Vacation Events in Chicxulub Puerto July 27 through August 18: Fiesta de la Virgen de la Asuncion Mark your calendars now. The Comisario of Chicxulub Puerto has announced the following events: July 27: A Dance to Begin the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Asuncion This dance is a must attend event because the entertainment will be provided by the internationally famous group known as Sonora Santanera .
