There's Never Been a Better Time to Visit Cancun
Posted On 05/11/2009 14:52:50 by administrator
We don't usually cover the happenings in Quintana Roo, our neighbors to the East, but what we saw in Cancun today warrants a special report for anyone interested in taking a quick vacation there.

Though hysteria over the Coughing Pig Death has definitely calmed considerably, the whole ordeal has left Cancun a bit of a ghost town. As most of our readers know, the flood of cancellations following the news has been catastrophic to Mexico's tourism industry. But for those of us who are just a few hours' drive away, there is an incredible opportunity to have a great mini-vacation.

The pictures accompanying this article were all taken at noon on Monday, at the Westin Regina, at the end of the hotel zone. As you can see, the beaches are all but deserted, and the pools are empty. Of course, all services are still in place, including spa treatments, restaurants, etc. A taxi driver described it as "the way Cancun was 25 years ago." Our room was upgraded, for free.

This is as quiet and peaceful as we have ever seen Cancun, and it has been wonderful. There is a real opportunity, right now, to experience the best that Cancun has to offer, the restaurants, the shopping, and that blue, blue Caribbean water, with none of the things that turn a lot of us off about Cancun: the crowds, the expense, and the acres of burned white flesh wearing leather sandals.

Here are a few more pictures:

Plenty of room on the beach.

Plenty of room at the swim-up bar.

Plenty of room poolside.

If you don't have anything else going on this weekend, consider a quick trip to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Cozumel. It is quiet, empty, and gorgeous...without a respirator or mask in sight. Enjoy it while you can; tourism here could certainly use a boost, and opportunities like this one don't come along often.

IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER.  If you were considering going to Cancun, now is absolutely the best time.  If you have service from Spirit Airlines, they are having an incredible sale.   You would have to fly to Fort Lauderdale (a $18 fare roundtrip) and then to Cancun (another $18 fare).

With fees it would be a bit more, but you won't get there cheaper.   Check out this website.

I spoke with my friends in Cancun one who works at the airport got laid off till further notice .  He said the hotels are so quiet that they are asking employee's to take a month off without pay. Yes the service is still there but they do not need all the staff.  It has hit Cancun hard so please if anyone wants to go,, please do and help these people with their tourism while you have a wonderful relaxing vacation.  This is a special place for me and have wonderful friends that live there that need help and work. No one is sick there from what I hear.

We're heading to Cabo in a few weeks. I hope it's the same there, although I'm worried about what it's doing to the people who rely on tourists for a living.

On another happier note, "Coughing Pig Death"? Love it. Thanks for the laugh out loud funny.

It's killing the company I work for.  28 tours that were booked for June have cancelled putting bus drivers, tour guides, etc. in a tough spot.

There is time to make it to all of those destinations (Cancun, Playa de Carmen, and Cozumel. According to a Carnival Cruise spokeswoman, the "American sanitary authorities" (the CDC) is not clearing cruise ships to land in Mexico until June 20.
