We continue to get questions related to safety in Mexico and will post new statistics as they are made available. It takes a while for crime statistics for any given year to be reported, then more time for analysis and comparisons to be made. The following numbers are for 2008, and are an observation of the latest homicide statistics in Mexico. We are only just now beginning to be able to get complete numbers for the U.S., since they either did not calculate and/or did not publish many statistics during the previous administration.
Today:
Mexico City homicide rate approx. = homicide rate in Los Angeles, CA
Mexico City homicide rate less than 1/3 homicide rate of Washington, D.C.
Mexico’s Homicide Rate (per 100,000)
1997: 17 (highest ever due to indigenous land problems in Chiapas)
2007: 10
2009: 14 (due to drug related murders in 2 states)
2008 Homicide Rates (per 100,000)
Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador, & Guatemala: Rates between 40 and 60
Colombia: 33
Brazil: 24 (in 2006 – last date numbers were available)
Mexico City: 9
Washington, D.C.: 30
Chiapas: 8 (down from 40 during the land disputes of the 1990s)
Chihuahua: 173 (home to Ciudad Juarez – but only 5 neighborhoods there have problems in that very large city)
Michoacan: rate on the rise, 660 killings in 2008
State of Yucatan: ZERO
Please Note:
The U.S. issues travel advisories for Mexico, Colombia and Haiti, but not for any other nation in Latin America. While this is U.S. State Department Policy, the logic escapes me and it is especially troubling when we know that some of those countries are actively courting American, Canadian, and European retirees at the same time that their homicide and other crime rates are rising.
Crime Headlines in the Entire State of Yucatan This Week
Somebody stole a tricycle.
Somebody on a motorcycle hit somebody on a bicycle.
Somebody did rob someone, but was caught immediately.
A few domestic violence calls …
A few more traffic accidents…
A few of those massage tents on the beach with no license…
Malcolm’s favorite: a few graffiti “artists” (kids with a can of spray paint)
… and that’s about it
