My husband and I have just bought a house in Chuburna and need a good contractor aka cheap, reliable.  We also need a car, mattresses, stuff to set up the house.  Where is a good place to buy hammocks without paying the tourist prices in Progresso on cruise ship day?  Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

One thing I have learned is that you can't have too many plastic containers when living at the beach. Crackers, cookies, chips...everything needs to be put in plastic after its opened. Buy plastic containers at the plastic store in Progreso. They are much cheaper than at Bodega. The store is off Calle 80. From the plaza, the plastic store runs east and is one block to the north. They also carry dishes, pans, etc. for setting up a kitchen at good prices.

ww,

Hey I live here in Chelem and had a lot of work done by Luis Vera.He is a great guy and really fair on pricing.

He did major work on my house and although the major stuff is finnished we have the painting to do and we have just started with it.

If you get a chance come by the house and i will show yo luis's work.

As you come into chelm from chuburna you would take a left at the baseball field and go 2 blocks where you will see hotel Las Garza on your left and my house is on the right.

Also there is a used furniture store in progreso on calle 33,he is on the left side just pass the statue of the naked lady.Keep going on 33 until you see the naked lady and go 2 more blocks and do a u turn and hes on the corner. He has a lot of stuff but its good to keep checking back with him because he is always getting more stuff in.

We are home here most of the time so just drop in,email address is sarge1655@yahoo.com

Good hammocks are rather expensive no matter where you buy them.  As far as the contractor goes, "cheap" is relative here and there are good and bad ones depending on how much work you need done.  Pretty much every able bodied local male is as contractor or has a brother or uncle or cousin who is.  Ask to see examples of their work.
Car....don't know.  Furniture:  There is a pretty interesting used furniture place on Calle 33 going west out of Centro Progresso.  It's about a block or so past the intersection with the non-working fountain and is on the other side of the street (don't you love directions here?).  They do bargain and the guy who we work with is named Ruben and he speaks a little English.
