i am thinking of purchasing a 6x12 closed trailer and using it to bring my personal stuff. once i get it there does anyone know of a secure lot where i can store it? i will be in chuburna but could store it in progresso or some other nearby town and the charge for that if anyone knows. i may import it and sell it. i was also thinking i might rent it out for local use or to expats wanting to take it back to the states to bring back personal posessions. is there a market for that in the area? opinions and suggestions!

Are you renting when you get here? We bought and brought a trailer and it sits on the side of our house unmolested so far. Not sure how import works, we got a permit to bring it in when we got the permit for the SUV. They only gave us one sticker so I guess that begs the question
If the SUV permit included a trailer what happens if I take the SUV back to the US without the trailer and have the sticker removed?
Do you have to import trailers? I have seen trailers with non-Mx plates for sale on Yolisto, can they do that legally or are their similar issues for trailers as their are for cars?
I am gonna have to start looking to see if trailers even have plates here :) |

we did buy but there is no place to park a trailer. i will need to put it on a storage lot somewhere. i was told that you can import them and sell them legally. my preferance would be to keep it at least for a while and i was thinking about renting it out to others as a way to defer the cost of purchase and storage but i do not know if there is storage or a market for renting it to others.

Hmmm...Down here we tend to borrow things rather than rent. I guess I'm not clear on the purpose for which you would be renting it. If it's just to haul furniture or plants I don't think you would have any takers since there seem to be plenty of friends willing to lend. It also seems that a lot of people sell the contents of their houses down here instead of taking them back. I'm not trying to be a downer because we considered everything you are considering before we came down. And yes we have a very small trailer sitting in our yard if anybody wants to borrow it. P.S. As usual I started typing before I finished reading your email. There are several people that travel back and forth by road every year so that may be a possibility or somebody that drove down here and rented and then decide to buy and is driving back to get their stuff.

You can't sell or lend, for that matter, your trailer, especially if it's for crossing the border.
It might not even make it across Mexican state lines. First it would have to be nationalized, just like our US and Canadian cars. And believe me they check, they want to know what's in every trailer and if everything is yours! Including the trailer. That's why we have a police stop here in Chelem almost year round. And you wouldn't be allowed to import and sell containers unless you have a licensed business and an import license for here in Mexico.
