Hi all
Was hopong someone could help me out with a couple of questions my daughter has. We have a house in Chelem and my daughter and her fiance are coming down to visit. She is interested in going to the Mayan Ruins and to the Cenote trips. Question one what is the best way to get there? She is not really interested in doing a tour but getting their on her own and having her own pace? Also the cenotes I remember reading an article- a whie back about someone who went off on her own and did this trip but cannot find it again.
My daughter is fluent in Spanish studied in Spain for a while so i think communication should not be any trouble for her. Also she is coming in at night from merida - how should she get to Chelem- are busses still running or how about a taxi- what should she expect to pay? Also any other ideas on what she should see while she is there- She is also interested in the Flamingos- where does she get the boat for this? THANKS ANY INFO AT ALL YOU CAN SHARE WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED. Me and Bogie will be down the end of month and are interested in meeting with some of you folks also.

If she is planning on touring herself she should probably consider renting a car. If she is uncomfortable with that she should talk to the bus and taxi drivers in Chelem Square and ask about renting them for some number of hours. We use Beto when folks come in on the cruise ship and paid $800 peso for 5-6 hrs of him driving us around to ruins, land, restaurants ... (6 people don't fit in my nissan pickup unless you put them in the back).

She can rent a car at the Merida airport or tack a taxi to Chelem. It has been 2 yrs since I took a taxi but I believe it was about $45 USD when the peso was 10 to 1. We used Beto to take us to the airport from Chelem for $500 pesos.

I think I can locate his phone # if you are interested. He does not speak english

We have hired Gustavo on a few occasions to take us from Chelem to Merida CAME and/or Fiesta Americana bus stations. He loves to practice his English on the way. We paid $350 MXP the last time, I believe. I'm sure he would be willing to do the airport run or also to be hired on an hourly basis.

There are also 2 ladies (one American, one Canadian) I know of who provide a service from the airport in their own private car. One is Ramona and the other is Joan.

Please pm me if you would like phone numbers.
