Author to Speak on Secret History of Chichén Itzá, Friday, Feb. 7

Evan J. Albright, author of The Man Who Owned a Wonder of the World: The True History of Mexico’s Chichén Itzá, will be at the Merida English Library on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. for a book talk and signing. This event is free and open to the public.
The Man Who Owned a Wonder of the World is the true story of Edward Herbert Thompson, an American archaeologist who explored the ancient cities of Yucatán for the great museums of the United States. In 1904, Thompson made one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in North America when he excavated gold, carved jade, and human skeletons from the Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Well) of Chichén Itzá.

Thompson’s excavation took several years and he removed thousands of objects that had been sacrificed into the cenote by the ancient Maya. How was it possible that an American could get unfettered access to one of the most famous archaeological sites in Mexico? It was easy. He owned Chichén Itzá. Award-winning journalist Albright began researching Thompson and Chichén Itzá in 2004 and on Feb. 7 he will speak about nearly ten years of research—in Mexico, the United States, and around the world—to uncover the true story behind The Man Who Owned a Wonder of the World. The event is free, and copies of the book will be available for purchase (with all proceeds going to the Merida English Library).

Location: Merida English Library
Time: 7:00 PM
Admission: Free
