Am needing a new FMM (hopefully for 180 diàs), and a bus trip seems most fitting. Can anyone relate recent experience at this border? Have heard it's possible to take Chetumal-Corozal bus (or taxi) from Nuevo Mercado bus stand to border, turn in current FMM, pay DNI only if necessary:-), walk to the second Mexican Immigration office (handling persons entering Mex.)at the other end of the duty-free zone, and apply for a new FMM there...without having to deal with Belize at all. Is this true? First hand knowledge most definitely appreciated. (Horror stories welcome?) What's the latest, please? Muchas gracias!

I know people who have done this more than once. Sometimes it goes as you described, sometimes the Mexican officials turn you back for 3 days, or sometimes you have to pay a $1000+ peso "fee" to do a quick turnaround. Random luck as to what your experience will be. Think positive!
