Curious if anyone has ever done slate countertops in their kitchens/bathrooms here? Are slabs of slate even available here? I know the tiles are. I'm not having much luck in my searches....

I believe it would be very hard to find true slate here . As a builder, I have not come across it in the past. But things change so fast in Merida that it might be possible for you to run into a vendor that decided to try it out.
The largest distributor of marble and granite in Merida is “Mido” (http://www.canterasmido.com/?lang=en). If you are looking to try something different in your counter tops (other than the local natural stones) , I would recommend taking a trip to “Mido” , if they do not have slate, which I doubt they would , at least the trip is worth it since there you will find truly beautiful stones for you project from around the world.
Just some advice …. Mido is an excellent source to purchase natural stones, but I would not recommend their services to install. For no other reason that they are a very large company and your project might be too small for them to take it seriously. I would recommend instead contacting any of the granite workers next to the general cemetery, or people from village of “Dzitya” which are masters dealing with stone.

Make your life easier and go with quartz countertops. They're basically maintenance free, don't pit or stain. We went with quartz in our kitchen and love it. I knew I'd get lime juice on the counter on the first day and would be bothered by the resulting stain forever more if we went with a natural stone. The quartz is perfect!

I didn't think it would be easy to find slate. Just curious to see if it was even available. I would live to have it in the kitchen. I'm a fan 🙂 I like quartz but i prefer more 'matte' finishes. But quartz is very practical. Especially if I want to rent the house out. We'll see! Thanks again!
