FILEY runs this year from March 7 (yep, already behind us) through March 15. The local state university, UADY, initiated the Yucatan book fair in 2012 and continue to sponser the event. Over the years, FILEY has brought to the Siglo XXI convention center hundreds of authors of renown, and many many publishing and book distribution houses, including some from outside Mexico. While not the immense offerings of the annual book fair in the Palacio de Mineria in the DF, FILEY is mighty impressive for Merida.
Even for non-Spanish speakers, I believe it would be exciting to visit, to see all the titles, including works of internationally famous writers in Spanish translation. Every day there are presentations and discussions of books. For full details, select http://www.filey.mx/ and then the big orange button DESCARGA Programa Oficial FILEY 2015. We went yesterday (Sunday) with the interest in seeing what was going on, but with little intention to purchase. However, we came home with even more reading to put on our list of to do reading.
Sadly, as with just about all events in the north of Merida, there are few folks from Yucatan's majority poor population present -- no surprise given the price of most books in Mexico and the poor purchasing power of half the population.
